WANTED: Another sucker (whoops, I mean, energetic) person to go out and help me locate trails that don't exist. Must be flexible at every joint, waterproof, able to leap brooks in a single bound, and be a direct descendant of a bloodhound ;D Additional requirements are: a) nerves of steel (or carry a 30-06) b) blood that coagulates by itself c) a good sense of direction or Compass/GPS literate d) a working knowledge of a two-way radio e) a love for bush-whacking or the bushes whacking you f) not allergic to pain-killers (which you'll need afterwards) This is a paid, temporary position and can run anywhere from 2-20 hrs per day, depending on how skilled you are... Read 'Mountain News' for job details and a description of what you may encounter...Only serious applicants need reply...Ha!

Hydiseka, you're hired!... And Mrs. Hood, you would like it too - we don't have to do the mountain-climbing thing at this point, it's just finding a better route to avoid the swampy section and connect up to the trail going up the mountains. We also need to find a very short section from the end of the clearcut to Coon Brook Rd....I suspect this clearcut goes all the way through... Then from Coon Brook Rd., we need to find an old skidder path or anglers trail that takes us onto a western ridge above Unknown Pond, then drop down - go north and supposedly come out onto Big Brook Bog Road... I'll be doing my homework and getting the coordinates ready...and yes!---I'm excited! You can't imagine how hard it is to get someone to go out there with me...they all look at me like 'What are you, crazy?'...  |

 If you look at the map - from waypoint 010 to 011, this area is all boggy...with islands...In the spring, it may be unpassable even with bog bridging... It would be ideal to find a way, perhaps west, to cross over easier... If we did that, then we would run southeast of the lesser Covell Mtn hanging around 2250' and still run across our flags and avoid the ledges. |

Well, there ain't no tigers out there but the other two I can't guarantee... Actually, I think you really would like it... not as rough as our trip up Stub Hill - at least this section isn't... We don't need to run the boundary because that's already done... That 4+ mile section is already flagged! And that was far worse than anything I've been through before! It's going to take days to cut through that mess! We would have a fairly clear, passive walk from the end of Round Pond to Coon Brook Bog road... |

Well, Pathfinder is game for another trek up Covell! Leaving at noon and by all rights, the entire trail from Ramblewoods to Coon Brook Bog Road will be completed today (flagging). I have to stay optimistic about this despite the experiences in the past... AND... if anyone so much as 'thinks' about removing these flags....  |

Well I'm glad you found the flags. I can't believe there was only 1/8 mile of them missing, but then again that would be about 500
flags maybe their pockets were full or they got tired from tearing them down ;D
Was the trail on the flat near the meadow we walked through
before we gave up?

I know you guys are not gonna like this but: I really could never understand why people put ribbons all over the woods. IF I put ribbons everywhere I walked, it would look pretty ugly out there. If your blazing a trail, there are other ways to go about it. |

Ah Ha! Dualmass Have you been in the boggy area of the two Covell summits lately?... Ha! For those of you that don't understand why we do what we do, here is the run-down: (A rather lengthy process, to say the least!) 1. The Cohos Trail submits a proposed route on paper to where we'd like to run the trail. 2. We attend meetings in Lancaster and Pittsburg to meet with State Officials and other major landowners to get this approved. 3. We contact all landowners involved and find out who wants the trail and who doesn't. 4. We re-route (on paper) around those who don't want the trail and who does. 5. Re-submit the newly revised proposal and get that approved. 6. Go out and walk (and flag) the proposed trail, often going in from various points to find the least boggy areas and search for the more gradual ascents and descents... 7. Go back and double-flag, removing unnecessary flagging (chopping off wandering loops etc...) 8. Contact the landowners with maps of flagged route and GPS coordinates. 9. Landowner goes out and follows the double-flagging and GPS's it for their own records and makes notes. (I walk this with them unless requested not to do so.) 10. If the landowner approves the proposed trail, then he signs the proposal and sends it off to the 'higher ups'. 11. The 'higher ups' either approve or disapprove the trail. 12. If not approved, then we go back to step 5 (which did happen). If approved, then we hire a crew and 'Following our own flagging' - go out and start cutting a 4ft. wide swath - 8 feet high. 13. We open up another section of this awesome 162 mile long trail! 14. We maintain this trail (clearing blowdowns, etc...) 'til forever so future generations can enjoy! The flagging is necessary so that the landowner 'knows' where the trail is going and they will be assured that we won't be cutting where they don't want...and we can't use paint because it may not be the best route after-all. (it's hard to scrub paint off trees) So....when the trail is all in place, there will be no use for the flags because hopefully the moose will keep the trail open for us. Hope this clarifies things for those out there that don't understand why... and also for those out there that have the urge to remove flagging, not knowing why it's there to begin with. An important thing to note here is The Cohos Trail and Lyme Timber Co., as well as The State and our other landowners welcome hunters, snow-shoers, etc...on the trail. Shed hunters are welcome too. We, as a hiking club, do not agree with banning the area from hunting!... Hikers need to hike with that in mind and wear appropriate clothing... We are all hunters too and don't believe in shutting down forests! True, most hunters or bush-whackers know their territory and don't need or want flags littering the woods... some don't even want a trail... but I think these woods are big enough to accommodate both and like I mentioned before, these flags will be coming down, leaving a nice little trail from Ramblewoods all the way to Big Brook Bog, when all is said and done. This following map shows what happens when flags are removed and numerous individuals come in from different directions to connect from point A to point B...   and...  ...where one grassy bog looks like another....and one knoll looks like the last.... ***Also, it's important to note here that the map of our tracks up above were only of the tracks of the person carrying the GPS...so it's not showing all of the wandering around I did too...As you can see, waypoint 61 was right on top of the proposed trail but we couldn't find the invisable flagging |

I agree with you Dualmass but after hearing MtnGoat explain what they had to go through and experiencing some of it myself (the last pic shows me removing a flag after deciding it wasn't the way we needed to go) I promised MtnGoat I wouldn't remove any flagging "while in N.H." However In PA. the flags will still disapear along with any "cat eyes" I find |

It makes sense to me, and I agree a trail thru that area would be good for many people, who enjoy wandering around the woods.
I do take flags down where i see them, but if it means getting my feet wet to do it, then forget it.

I can just picture the scene...
Mtn Goat tromping through the woods all day leaving a nice trail of ribbons, and Dualmass 15 min behind collecting all the ribbons.
Kinda like when I was a little kid - my mother spending 2 hours hiding Easter eggs, with the dog 2 steps behind eating every one.

Can't believe I missed you guys again. I swung by on Saturday AM on my way down Route 3 from the border on my way to the Manchester Airport. Guess you were out. I also stopped at the auction briefly but did not see you there either. Dang! I'll send some photos of my fishing trip up in Maine. Beautiful country up your way!

The Cohos Trail is seeking chainsaw operators!....If the Covell Mountain Trail is approved, then there's going to be a party up in the woods on Lyme's boundary... We're looking to fill one more position. If you are sue-happy, then you might as well stay home because we don't have any money and you know the old saying 'you can't get blood out of a rock!' Seriously, we do need one more person and the job pays $10.00 an hour plus gas mileage - must be 21 years old or older and need to wear chaps and a hardhat.
